Sneaky Chatting

Maddie and her bestie Aubs are inseparable. They get together and all of a sudden you’ve got a couple of chatty old bitties. This is a long haul type of friendship. Partly because they’re two peas in a pod and partly because they’re cousins.

So. Attached at the hip, cousin besties. Yep.

Except these cousin besties are separated by a 45 minute drive. Oh, and they are both seven. So it’s not like they can cruise from Oak Forest to Joliet with the top down and the wind in their hair.

They get to see each other as often as a not so busy family (us) can connect with a super duper busy family (them).

Apparently this frequency is not to their satisfaction.

Maddie was watching TV yesterday and I can hear the familiar refrain of one of her favorite shows. And then I hear it again, like a weird echo bouncing off the corner of my mind. I head downstairs and she’s hanging in the corner of the couch watching away. The echo keeps bouncing.

This is the day that I learn about Facetime on Snapchat.

This is the day I’m grateful for wifi.

This is the day I learn we need to lay down some ground rules for live streaming, tag teaming, Disney show watching  marathon chats.

  1. Oh, that clever girl! She found a way to sneak in a morning visit with her bestie and you didn’t have to drive 45 minutes for her to do it! Sounds like a win-win to me. I love the structure of this piece, especially the 3-part ending set off with “This is the day…”

  2. Woah, woah, woah. There is a Facetime feature on Snapchat??

I’ve always loved your Maddie’s relationship with her cousin. It’s been cute to watch it develop. You know what they say, right? Cousins are our first best friends.
